Music in the Berkshires

Oh, the joys of a grab bag gift! It’s the thrill of a secret wrapped up in a beautiful package. You don't know quite what you're going to get, but the mystery sparks excitement and anticipation. For the past month, we’ve been sharing different types of stories and ideas with you, ushering in the glee of seeing a new weekly newsletter in your inbox- what will it be today? A recipe? A story about members of your community? Maybe it will be a glimpse of a new, local artist or a valuable resource you didn’t know existed. There are so many wonderful people, institutions, and events to share in our region, and we’re committed to bringing them to you, every week.

~Megan Demarest, Editor of The Guide

As we welcome February 2025, I am reminded that it was just about a year ago when Music in the Berkshires became a part of the Old Mill Road Media family. This digital publication was founded in the spring of 2023 by my Berkshire-based colleague, Mark Greenlaw. Mark has built a remarkable resource for people looking for live music events in the Berkshires, and with the incredible wealth of music happening there, we’re so grateful he has taken on the task! The Berkshires and Southwestern Vermont regions are deeply connected. While you scroll this week’s local events in The Guide, you’ll see a Berkshire-based group performing here in Bennington! I personally know musicians who live in Vermont and frequently have concerts in the Berkshires. After all, we’re just down the road…

The heart of Music in the Berkshires’ platform is its music calendar, which lists nearly every live music performance in Berkshire County all year long. The site covers every genre of music from classical to jazz, rock, folk, blues, bluegrass, hip-hop, and many others. The Berkshires has a vibrant music history, known worldwide as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, and as a place of significant rock and folk music history. I’ve enjoyed watching the platform expand over the last year while Mark, as Content Director, has continued to stay on top of the Berkshires’ music scene not just by scouring the internet and organizing all the concerts and performances each week, but also by continuing to tell the stories of local musicians who are shaping that scene, delving deeper into their lives and inspirations through articles shared on the Music in the Berkshires website and in our sister publication, Berkshire Magazine. In a piece from Berkshire Magazine’s Spring 2024 issue, Mark outlined his goals for Music in the Berkshires. “From the beginning, my goal has been to give music lovers a chance to easily find the music they love and to lift up the venues and artists in our region.”

As we continue to see Music in the Berkshires thrive, we’re feeling very warm and fuzzy about the one-year anniversary of our collaboration with Mark and can’t wait to see what’s next in the year to come!
